Ruben Loftus-Cheek reacts on Instagram after Frank Lampard confirms his return to Chelsea squad

The midfielder has not made a senior appearance for Chelsea this season because of injury, but he has been named in the squad to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday

Chelsea and Frank Lampard have been handed a massive fitness boost ahead of facing Tottenham Hotspur.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is in the senior squad for the first time this season.

The Blues head coach confirmed the news during his pre-match press conference at Cobham on Friday afternoon, but made sure to stress that there's no chance the 24-year-old will start at Stamford Bridge.

Ruben is in the squad, not fit to start but great to have him in the squad," Lampard told reporters.

If Loftus-Cheek is named on the bench, there's a chance he could make his first senior appearance since last season before an Achilles injury cruelly ruled him out of the Europa League final win over Arsenal as well as the entirety of this campaign until now.

In fact, his last Premier League outing was the goalless draw against Leicester City on the final day of last season - just a few days before the end of season friendly against New England Revolution.

Since then Loftus-Cheek has been training with the first-team and got a run out for the U23's at the beginning of the month, but his comeback is almost fully complete.

And it would appear that the England international is getting rather excited about a potential return to first-team action.

Taking to social media after it was confirmed by Lampard that he will be in the squad to face Spurs, the midfielder uploaded an image of him stretching for the ball during Friday's training at Cobham to his Instagram stories.

Whilst Loftus-Cheek's return to the squad is fantastic news for everyone connected to the Blues, it did come as somewhat of a surprise as he missed Monday night's U23's clash against Arsenal.

And Lampard has confirmed the midfielder suffered a slight setback.

"He was [supposed to play], but then he had a small issue and we felt it wasn’t right to risk him," Lampard said. "It was tiny, but it was one of those we wanted to control a bit more so we came away from that."
